Tour Description

The Nairobi Railway Museum tells the story of the Uganda Railway, the line that ran from Mombasa to Lake Victoria and effectively created Nairobi, which began life in 1899 as a railway depot at the halfway point. The collection includes locomotives, rolling stock, signalling equipment, photographs and records covering the construction of the line and its role in shaping modern Kenya.

The exhibit most visitors come for is the carriage connected to the man eating lions of Tsavo, which killed a number of railway workers during the building of the Tsavo bridge in 1898 and halted construction for months. You can walk through the old carriages and climb aboard several of the locomotives in the yard. Entrance fees, hotel transfers, mineral water and a guide are included.

Detailed Itinerary

Your driver guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and transfers you to the Nairobi Railway Museum, beside the main railway station in the city centre.

A guided tour through the indoor galleries covering the construction of the Uganda Railway, the founding of Nairobi as a railway depot, and the line’s role in the development of East Africa. Exhibits include the carriage associated with the man eating lions of Tsavo, original signalling equipment, models, photographs and records. Outside in the yard you can walk among and climb aboard preserved steam locomotives and rolling stock.

You are driven back to your hotel or on to another destination of your choice.
